One Nation One Election: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal would benefit the nation, said Kedar Kashyap

Kedar Kashyap, the forest minister for Chhattisgarh, spoke today at the One Nation One Election social seminar held at Jagdalpur’s Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Town Hall.

In September 2023, the Central Government established a high-level committee on “One Nation – One Election” (ONOE), led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, Minister Kedar Kashyap informed the public about the history of the election. The committee solicited opinions from the general public and legal experts with potential suggestions, and also conferred with political parties at the federal and state levels. There are worries about how the one country, one election plan may affect India’s federal and democratic systems.

In 1951–1952, all state legislatures and the Lok Sabha conducted their first general elections at the same time. The cycle was broken in 1968 and 1969 when certain legislatures were dissolved too soon, but this tradition persisted in the next three general elections in 1957, 1962, and 1967. New elections were conducted in 1971 after the Lok Sabha itself was prematurely dissolved in 1970. Therefore, only the first, second, and third Lok Sabhas fulfilled their allotted five-year terms till 1970.

The ‘One Nation-One Election’ vision of the Modi government

The One Nation One Election, according to Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap, is the outcome of the Modi Government’s forward-thinking policies. This proposal, he added, anticipates a situation in which general Lok Sabha elections are conducted every five years, coupled with elections in every state. In order to save time and money, we propose to simplify the voting process and have fewer elections.

One Nation One Election Reduces Governance Distractions: According to Minister Kedar Kashyap, regular elections cause the nation as a whole to shift its focus from national leaders to local representatives, which paralyzes the government at all levels. Effective governance is hampered and India’s growth potential are negatively impacted by this election-related obsession.

Impact of Model Code of Conduct: According to the Forest Minister, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which is put into effect before elections, delays important national and local policy decisions. Election-related responsibilities take precedence over current initiatives, which slows down routine administration.

In an effort to combat political corruption, the government

Minister Kashyap informed the populace of the Modi government’s goal, stating that Prime Minister Modi ji supports the advancement and development of the populace. Since every election necessitates raising a significant sum of money, the Modi administration and we both think that holding elections often contributes to political corruption. Simultaneous elections have the potential to significantly lower political parties’ election costs, removing the need for recurrent fund-raising. Additionally, it will lessen the burden on the general public and corporate sector to consistently donate to elections.

Kedar Kashyap, the minister of forests, has encouraged people to talk to as many people as they can about this subject. This project will become a major movement if it is discussed by the general public. “I think we all agree with Prime Minister Modi on this idea,” he added, adding that “we have to think about One Nation One Election and move forward in this direction.”
